Irrigation valves and taps allow you to control the flow of water and to isolate sections of the watering system for maintenance and repair.
Taps are normally placed outside to create a temporary connection to the water supply and are often manufactured from brass. On the tap outlet there may be a removable hose union, if this is removed then fittings can be connected to the tap to allow hoses or pipes to be fitted. For new installations wall plates are also available to accept 20mm or 25mm MDPE pipe.
Outdoor taps are normally drained down in the wintertime to protect them from frost, but the plastic Ice Valve is frost resistant to -20 degrees C, although it is important to ensure that any supply pipes are properly insulated.
Irrigation valves are normally placed inline of the pipe to control an irrigation zone. They can be manual valves or automatic solenoid valves. There are a number of different valves available including 1/4 turn or lever valves for fast operation on and off. Gate valves are often used on the outlet of the water storage tank, as they are resistant to frost damage.
Stopcocks are normally located at the start of the irrigation system to isolate the entire irrigation system. If the system has a water storage tank, then a stopcock will generally be specified for the water supply to the tank itself.
You can buy irrigation valves and taps online from Access Irrigation’s components store.
