Irrigation using drip nozzles is much more water efficient than sprinkler systems, as very little water is lost to evaporation. Modern dripper nozzles are very reliable and have very consistent outputs. Pressure compensated drippers on a properly designed irrigation system ensure that the output of the drippers on a long pipe run is unaffected by the pressure drop in the pipe – meaning the first and last dripper produce exactly the same output. Non-leakage irrigation drip nozzles have a shut-off mechanism which prevents ‘after-dripping’ at the end of the watering cycle – essential for pulsed irrigation systems.

The first recorded use of drip irrigation dates to around 600 BC when the Egyptians employed clay pots filled with water to slowly release moisture to plant roots.
