Mains Irrigation Controllers powered from mains electricity provide high levels of reliability and plenty of features. They can also be connected to Wi-Fi, which uses too much power for battery controllers. Wi-Fi makes the watering controller Smart, with the ability to monitor and programme the watering controller from anywhere.
Mains controllers need to be plugged into mains power to operate them, but for safety the signal cables that run out to the solenoid valves use a 24v low voltage signal. A battery backup inside the controller ensures the programmes are maintained in the even of a power cut. Due to the additional power available, solenoid valves can be located a long way from the controller – hundreds of meters in some cases. For more resilience 24v solenoid valves are used on mains irrigation powered systems.
