Are you tired your lawn looking brown and dry during the summertime when it could be lush and green? Do you want to take action but are unsure where to start? Then look no further – as this blog will address the options of lawn watering with garden sprinklers that are available to enable you to set up your own lawn watering system.
There are essentially two options to choose from – permanent and temporary. Permanent systems are the more sophisticated option, using permanently fixed popup sprinklers which are completely hidden out of sight when not in operation, with MDPE pipe and fittings buried in trenches underground, protected from surface damage, and frost during the winter. Temporary systems are the more basic option, using sprinklers mounted on risers, connected via standard hose. Permanent systems are much more convenient and precise, however, will cost more than temporary systems as will require a pump & tank unit to run, and are more complex, and take longer to set up. In contrast, temporary systems are quick to set up, however they will need to be continuously moved on and off the lawn as and when required and are less accurate at providing even watering compared to using the specifically designed, fixed positions of the popup sprinklers within a permanent system.
Permanent Lawn Watering Systems
For permanent systems, we supply a range of Hunter popup sprinkler models, meaning that there will always be a model suitable for the size and shape of your lawn. Models are conveniently supplied with a range of nozzles, enabling the sprinkler watering radius to be altered according to the nozzle inserted – ensuring that lawns of all sizes receive full water coverage. Models also feature an adjustable watering arc angle – ranging from less than quarter circle watering, all the way up to full circle, ensuring that lawns of all shapes receive complete coverage – which is particularly useful for unusually shaped lawns. This adjustable angle also helps to eliminate spray overthrow, preventing any non-lawned areas from being watered.
The Hunter sprinkler model most suitable for watering small lawns is the MP rotator popup sprinkler, which has a very small minimum watering radius of 3m. This small radius is also ideal for watering awkwardly shaped areas within medium or large lawns – for example in areas where lawns may become narrow, or angled in places – again eliminating the problem of overspray that a non-MP model may be unlikely to prevent in such cases. Another substantial benefit of the MP rotator is that it uses multi-trajectory rotating streams which are designed to deliver water at a steady rate – this slower application enabling the water to gently soak in at rates that soils can easily absorb. Using this watering method also provides water savings of up to a substantial 30%, thus saving money.
Another Hunter model choice for watering small to medium lawns is the PGJ popup sprinkler – which is very well built and economically priced. This model provides a substantial range in watering radius from 4m to 12m and substantial arc range of a small 40 degrees (ideal for watering narrow, awkward areas) all the way up to watering at full circle.
A step up from the PGJ is the PGP Ultra popup sprinkler, which is an extremely well-built, heavy-duty sprinkler ideal for watering larger lawns. This model enables a watering radius from 8m all the way up to a substantial 14m and an arc radius ranging from 50 degrees all the way up to full circle. Short range nozzles are also available for this model – decreasing its watering radius to just over 5m if required, which can be useful for those who have unusually shaped areas within their larger lawn but for convenience don’t want to use different models of sprinkler within the same system.
Moving on to temporary systems, we supply all-inclusive sprinkler riser kits which are designed to be easily set up, and conveniently used with standard garden hose. We supply two different size kits using sprinklers mounted on sturdy sled risers – the hose easily being able to be connected to several risers in a run, as each riser has an inlet and outlet – enabling the hose to run from one to another. These kits take less time and effort to set up than permanent popup sprinkler kits, however, they will need to be moved when required, and the sprinkler spray radius and angles cannot be altered, so the spray coverage may not be as accurate as desired.
Temporary Lawn Watering
We also supply a temporary sprinkler system which is specifically designed for watering smaller lawns. Because of its smaller size this system can use the sophisticated MP rotator nozzle mentioned above, meaning that the lawn will benefit from more efficient, accurate, and gentle watering. This system uses small metal spiked risers which are pushed into the lawn for security, with hose connecting each together – as just like the larger temporary system each has an inlet and outlet. A disadvantage of this system is that it will need to be moved when required, with this possibly temporarily damaging the aesthetic appearance of the lawn, however on the other hand the spikes are less cumbersome to manoeuvre than the sled risers.
